our story

At the heart of Timberlandā€™s story isĀ aĀ community ā€“ several communities ā€“ steppingĀ outsideĀ to work hard together and move theĀ world forward.Ā With grit and a relentlessĀ dedication to problemĀ solving, these bold doersĀ embrace the adventures on their path.

our roots

DEFINED BY THE OUTDOORS:

Without New Englandā€™s fierce and demandingĀ environs, there would be no Timberland. We started by equipping workers to power through the toughest outdoor environments.

THE FOUNDING FAMILY

alt

Born from the craftsmanship of our founderĀ Nathan Swartz, who first developed waterproof boots with his son Sidney, who then went on to brand the boots. Sidneyā€™s son Jeff took theĀ company on a journey of purpose that drive theĀ values today.

THE ORIGINAL FACTORY

alt

In 1955, Nathan took full control ofĀ Boston-based Abington Shoe Company and movedĀ operations to a damp and drafty riversideĀ factory in aĀ quietĀ New England town in the U.S.

THE ORIGINAL
TIMBERLANDĀ® BOOT

The yellow boot that started it all. In 1973, anĀ icon was born when the Abington ShoeĀ CompanyĀ launched the Original TimberlandĀ® 8-inch Boot. The 6-inch version was releasedĀ three yearsĀ later, becoming the icon we knowĀ today.

TIMBERLAND TODAY

alt

Today we are one global brand with threeĀ distinct categories:Ā Work, Life andĀ Outdoor.Ā They encompass allĀ our products, whether onĀ the job, trail, street or stage.

CULTURE OF
INNOVATION

Ever since the day we created our first yellow boot, weā€™ve been inspired by that gritty New England tendency to ā€˜think outside the boxā€™ and create innovative solutions to everyday problems.

our vision

From the start, we used our products to solve problems. This dedication grew to solving problems for our communities. That dedication has stayedĀ constant and grown into tackling bigger issuesĀ like climate injustice and responsibleĀ manufacturing.

alt
WATERPROOF

A factory worker had the clever idea ofĀ slathering silicone on his leather boots toĀ keep his feet dry. This inspired our founders to use injection molding to make the leather boots fully waterproof. As the ultimate test, they sunkĀ the boots with rocks in a factory toilet.

alt
INJECTION MOLDING

The introduction of injection moldingĀ technology seamlessly bonded the soles withĀ the uppers. This created some of the first trulyĀ waterproof leather work boots, whichĀ wereĀ comfortable and lightweight to wear,Ā revolutionizingĀ the footwear industry.
